Ellume Life began from a desire to combine my skills in photography and textiles with my love of the natural world and an innate need to create! An Arts degree, Secondary Teaching, and a love of travel have all informed my work. I want to tread lightly on this earth and provide a more sustainable option for people who care how their purchases affect our planet and the people involved in textile production around the world.
My work celebrates the colours, beauty and forms found in the environments I have been privileged to spend time in; my garden, the Australian bush and many other environments around the world. My hope is that my designs will Illume your life, literally “to decorate, embellish, ornament, grace, adorn, beauty, make resplendent or brighten with light”.
Ellume Life uses sustainable (natural and recycled) fibres like Hemp/Organic Cotton blends. Hemp enriches its soil, saves water and produces 2-4 times more fibre per area than other sources. Recycled fibres (from PET bottles) are used in the non-allergenic cushion inserts, which have a greater resilience rating and will last longer. I use environmentally friendly, solvent free inks to print my designs. I limit packaging where possible and any packaging is made from 100% recycled, post-consumer waste and Hemp/Jute twines.
The “Ellume Ethic”
Every textile we buy tells a story. We become part of that story each time we buy clothing or textiles for our home. Unfortunately much of the world’s textile production unnecessarily exploits our environment and the people working in the industry.
The Ellume Ethic goal is to wherever possible;
- Source materials that are derived from environmentally sustainable methods of production.
- Source materials from organisations where workers have fair conditions and remuneration.
- Know the people, processes and supply chains used to produce the fabrics, inks and other products I use.
Doing this is a challenge in our globalised context where we are distanced from the places and people who make our textiles, but it is possible. My efforts will not be perfect, but, helping to contribute to a story of hope where the environment and people involved in textile & homewares production are respected, is a story I’d like to be part of!
